During day to day life it is very easy to get swept up in your normal routines. Wake up, get ready, go to work, go home, relax, sleep, repeat. This is normal human behaviour and there is nothing wrong with it for one second. Sometimes though it is important to reflect and look at what is going on around you in the world and attempt to understand a little bit of the “bigger picture”

The word “Cancer” seems to constantly be in the media: TV Advertising for donations, news articles in every form of media, specialist campaigns on TV and in the local community: All of this is to raise awareness (and funding) for research and development into cures and providing support for sufferers and their families.

This is completely understandable considering the “Big C” is all around us – the facts are 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with some form of Cancer in our lifetime and massive steps have been made over the past 40 years in the development of treatments for cancer and in a lot of the types of cancer the survival rates have increased greatly.

Most adults now have at the very least a basic understanding of cancer and how it can impact themselves and the people around them. The saddest part of it is that it isn’t just adults that can develop cancer, it can and does also develop in children.

Children’s cancer devastates young lives and the lives of those around them. These children have not been in this world long and they are having to fight one of the most devastating diseases on this planet. It also turns a families’ world upside down when all they are trying to do is support their child.

This is why we support Candlelighters. Here is what Candlelighters do, in their own words:

"Established in 1976, Candlelighters is a charity formed and run by parents of children who have or have had cancer, ex-patients and the medical staff who treat them. Based in Yorkshire, Candlelighters provides essential services and support to children with cancer and their families.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instant. Not just for the child but for their parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and extended family. Priorities change, everyday concerns suddenly seem trivial and a future once so bright and so full of hope can appear bleak and daunting. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically, emotionally and even financially. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout that journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why we are still here today. Because Candlelighters was founded by, and is still run by, parents of children who have or have had cancer and the medical staff who treat them, we understand the trauma and the turmoil of that diagnosis and how the support and care needed may differ from family to family. So, whether it be through the support of the friendly staff and experienced counsellors, that 'home away from home environment we nurture on the ward in Leeds or the vital research into new treatments and cures we fund, we are here to help"
